The UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted in three stages-Prelims, Mains and Interview. Aspirants need to choose one optional subject for UPSC IAS mains exam. It plays a significant role in deciding aspirants ranking in IAS Exam. Recent trends show that the success rate of Literature subjects is soaring with years.
The UPSC allows Maithili as one of the optional literature subjects for the Civil Services Exam. Maithili is one of the 22 official languages of India included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India. Maithili literature has a rich and long history. It is used in parts of northern Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh as well as some districts of West Bengal and Assam. It is also spoken in Nepal. UPSC Mains includes Maithali literature as one of the optional subjects.
As it is a language-related subject, candidates who have studied Maithili in a formal setting or have learned Maithili as their native language should take up this optional. The paper has to be written in the Devanagari script.
Maithili consists of two papers (Paper I and Paper II) in UPSC Mains. Each paper is of 250 marks with a total of 500 marks. Find below the IAS Maithili syllabus for Civil Services Examination:
Maithili has a small number of speakers and hence study material is hard to find. Universities having Maithili as a part of their undergraduate courses are located in cities across eastern India and some central universities in other states. Candidates can source study material from there. Candidates should solve more questions from previous years ′ UPSC question papers as well as from mock tests to be able to crack the UPSC Maithili exam.
