Delhi – City of 7 Sisters

  • According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, a city called Indraprastha, “City of the God Indra,”

  • Purana Qila was built over the site of ancient Indraprastha.

Qila Rai Pithora 1170 AD
  • Dating back to 10th century.
  • First city of Delhi got its recognition due to availability of recorded historical facts.
  • City was established by Prithviraj Chauhan.
  • Known as Rai Pithora.
  • Delhi was initially in the hands of Tomar Rajputs.
  • Captured by Prithviraj՚s ancestors.
  • Tomar ruler possibly created the first known regular defence – Lal Kot.
  • Captured by Prithviraj Chauhan and extended it to Qila Rai Pithora.
  • Capital of his Kingdom located in Ajmer.
  • Ruins of rampant fort of Qila Rai Pithora is located near Qutub Minar.
Khilji Dynasty
  • Alauddin Khilji is the most well-known rulers of the Khilji dynasty.
  • He is given the credit of creating the second city of Delhi,
  • i.e.. Siri in the beginning of 14th Century.
  • Saljuk style՚s influence dominated the architecture created in this period.
  • Siri fort represented today by stretches of thick stone walls and a reservoir called Hauz Khas.
Tughlaqabad 1330 AD and Jahanpanah
  • Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq established Tughlaqabad in the second decade of 14th Century.
  • Created fort here the remnants of which still remain.
  • He was the first rulers of this dynasty.

Jahanpanah

  • Mohammad-Bin-Tughlaq, son of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq built Jahanpanah in the first half of 14th century.
  • Jahanpanah is a well enclosure in between Qila Rai Pithora and Siri.
Ferozabad 1354 AD
  • Next ruler of Tughlaq dynasty,
  • Nephew of Mohammad-Bin-Tughlaq, Firoze Shah Tughlaq created 5th city of Delhi, named Firozabad.
  • Created in 2nd half of 14th century next to the river Yamuna.
  • On the top of the palace, Ashokan pillar planted.
  • Firoze Shah also undertook large scale restoration and repair work of Qutub Minar.
  • Built a step well and a hunting lodge on the North Delhi ridge.
Dili Sher Shah 1540 AD

SHERGARH or DILLI SHER-SHAHI

  • Present Purana Qila is the creation of Sher Shah.
  • He captured Delhi from Humayun in 1540 AD.
  • Humayun originally built the city by the name Dinpanah.
  • The ruins of Humayun and Sher Shah are big tourist attraction in Delhi today.
Shahjahanabad 1639 AD

SHAHJAHANBAD

  • Mughal emperor Shahjahan brought back the capital of Delhi.
  • Built a fort and new city, named Shahjahanabad.
  • This new city inaugurated on Navroz in 1642.
  • Area of Shahjahanabad is now known as Delhi, magnificent monuments like Red Fort, Jama Masjid, etc, are present.
  • Transformations from Tomars to Mughals to British.
  • Contribution of Edwin Lutyen and Edward Baker in creating a well-planned administrative capital is also worth-mentioning.
