NCERT Class 6 Science Chapter 14: Water

Imagine There is Only Handful Water – What Will Happen?

Drinking

Brushing

Bathing

Washing

Cleaning

For daily activities, for industries, for irrigation

Water from tap is drawn from lake, river or well and supplied through network of pipes

2βŸ‹3rd earth covered with water – oceans and seas

Saline water – not fit for drinking (water - water everywhere, nor a drop to drink)

Ocean supply us water (indirectly) Water Cycle

Circulation of water and land – continuous process and maintains supply of water on land

πŸ‘‰ Disappearing Trick of Water (cloths dry, wet floor dries) where does this water goes?

Water evaporates

Salts are left behind

πŸ‘‰ 2 plates – one in sun and other in shade (water disappears faster in sun)

This warm air provides heat for evaporation of water in the shade.

Evaporation is a slow process

Transpiration – loss of water from plants

πŸ‘‰ Ice in Glass (water droplets on surface) – Condensation

Condensation brings water back to surface

As we go high it cools and water vapor condenses to form droplets – cloud formation

Precipitation – rain, snow, hail, …

Back to Oceans

Snow melts and merges into rivers

Rivers cover long distance and fall in sea

Rainwater absorbs in soil and disappears

Water as ground water – source for lakes, handpumps and tubewells

Flowing water causes soil erosion (seepage occurs but if concrete then no seepage)

Rains Heavily

  • In India – most rain in Monsoons after hot summer seasons
  • Rise in water level in water bodies
  • Submergence of land
  • Damage by floods
  • Damage to crops, animals, property and life
  • Animals are trapped on land areas and die when flood recedes
  • Water is blocked in pits and drains – cause diseases

Lack of Rain

  • Become dry
  • Water bodies will not have ample water
  • Loss of agriculture and crops
  • Difficulty in food and may lead to famine
  • Underground water level falls

Conserve Water

  • Small fraction of water is fit for drinking
  • Wise use of water is must
  • Judicious use
  • Stop wastage
  • Do not pollute water bodies
  • Rainwater harvesting – collection of water for dry months
  • β€œCatch water where it falls”
  • Rooftop
  • Allow it to percolate directly to ground
  • Tanks
  • Reservoirs
  • Water is also used as means of transport
  • Many civilizations flourished near water – Harappan, Egyptian
