  • Answer: a

The late Vedic period witnessed the progressive expansion of Aryan settlements down the northern corridor, first into the Doab and then into the Middle Ganges valley. The earliest Aryan homeland in India-Pakistan (Aryavarta or Brahmavarta) was in the Punjab and the valleys of the Saraswati and Drishadvati rivers in the time of the Rigveda. Thereafter is shifted into the Mid-land (Madhyadesa) , the Doab (already regarded as the central territory in the Mahabharata) , and yet later far to the east, to eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This development must have called for extensive clearance of the forests which formerly covered the Gangetic plains and is likely to have coincided with the general adoption of iron tools for purposes of agriculture. The archaeological evidence for the expansion is to be seen in the spread of Painted Grey ware and black-and-red ware sites and in the growth of cities.
