The world picture and the picture in South Asia Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That means about one in nine people on earth are undernourished. Women are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies than men are, for reasons including women՚s reproductive biology, low social status, poverty, and lack of education. Globally, 50 percent of all pregnant women are anaemic, and at least 120 million women in less developed countries are underweight. Research shows that being underweight hinders women՚s productivity and can lead to increased rates of illness and mortality. In some regions, the majority of women are underweight: In South Asia, for example, an estimated 60 percent of women are underweight. There are many causes of malnutrition in women. These can be divided into economic causes and social causes.

Women, unlike men have unique energy requirements, due to their physiology. Due to menstruation girls from an early age face loss of blood and also micronutrients like iron along with it. Women in some cases need more nutrients than men; for example, women need twice as much calcium as men. Thus, it is imperative that nutritional requirements of women are taken care of from an early age. The reproductive systems of women keep developing till the age of 17 - 18 years, and when a woman is pregnant the body undergoes several physiological changes to adapt to the requirements of the growing fetus. Delivery of a child is a stressful time for a woman՚s body since she loses much blood and fluids and the body needs to recoup from these efforts. Frequent pregnancies with short intervals between them and long periods of breastfeeding add an additional nutritional burden. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, women must ingest enough nutrients for themselves and their child, so they need significantly more protein and calories during these periods, as well as more vitamins and minerals (especially iron, iodine, calcium, folic acid, and vitamins A, C, and K) .

Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition because they are growing faster than at any time after their first year of life. They need protein, iron, and other micronutrients to support the adolescent growth spurt and meet the body՚s increased demand for iron during menstruation. Adolescents who become pregnant are at greater risk of various complications since they may not yet have finished growing. Thus, it is seen that women need extra food and nutritious food at all stages of their life. Social neglect, poverty, lack of awareness owing to lack of education, early marriage, early and repeated pregnancies all take their toll and women, especially in developing countries like India, are undernourished throughout their lives.
