The term used to describe acid attacks or acid throwing is vitriolage. Vitriolage literally means throwing oil of vitrioil (Concentrated Sulphuric acid) on the body of a person with the intent of injuring or disfiguring that individual out of jealousy or in order to take revenge. In common parlance the term vitriolage is used to describe the throwing of any corrosive, not necessarily sulphuric acid, on a person with malicious intent. The most commonly employed agent in acid attacks is Sulphuric acid (oil of vitriol) hence, the name given is Vitriolage. Sometimes Nitric acid and hydrochloric acid are also used. In rare cases usage of some other acidic and alkaline substances (caustic soda, caustic potash, iodine, battery fluid, marking nutjuice, phosphoric acid, chromic acid, carbolic acid etc.) has also been recorded. Both acids as well as alkalis (bases) are highly reactive chemicals capable of resulting in severe burn. Causes of Acid Attacks in India acid attacks on women are a systemic form of gendered sexual violence. Unlike acid attacks on men, these attacks are used as a weapon to silence and control women. Men brought up in a patriarchal culture consider themselves to be superior to women and their ego refuses to accept rejection from a woman. The easy and cheap availability of acids over the counter is another reason for its being chosen as a weapon of offence. In the majority of the cases, jilted lovers use it to destroy the looks of a woman. The key factor behind such attacks is revenge. To avenge the insult on account of a rejected proposal, spurned advances, insult in community due to getting less dowry etc. In some cases, suspected infidelity is also cited as the reason as men consider their wives as chattel and personal property with no mind or choices of their own. Sometimes parents also use it against their daughters for not conforming to their warped notions of traditions and doing things contrary to their accepted norms thereby bringing dishonor or disrepute to the family. Sometimes family feuds, property disputes, personal enmity and other reasons also prompt such crimes where women are chosen as targets to settle scores with their family.

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has launched NALSA (Legal Services to Victims of Acid Attacks) Scheme, 2016 on the occasion of legal Services day in November 2016 to provide legal assistance to acid attacks victims and ensure that they are appropriately rehabilitated in the society.
