SWAYAM

Study Webs of Active - Learning for Young Aspiring Minds

It an indigenously designed massive open online course (MOOC) , It will host all the courses, taught in classrooms from 9th class till post-graduation and can be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. It aims to bridge the digital divide for students in e-education.

SWAYAM is a program initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz. , access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged.

SWAYAM platform is indigenously developed by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) with the help of Microsoft and would be ultimately capable of hosting 2000 courses and 80000 hours of learning: covering school, under-graduate, post-graduate, engineering, law and other professional courses.

In the first phase, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, University of Delhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, IGNOU, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, Banaras Hindu University, alone as well as with the help of faculty from foreign universities will be offering courses in areas of engineering education, social science, energy, management, basic sciences. At least one crore students are expected to benefit in 2 to 3 years through this initiative. India has become one of the few countries in the World which has its own online interactive learning platform that provides, not only video lectures, reading material but also assignments⟋quizzes that could end up in securing credits after completing the assessment system.

The courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants – (1) video lecture, (2) specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded⟋printed (3) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion forum for clearing the doubts.

In order to ensure best quality content are produced and delivered, nine National Coordinators have been appointed: They are AICTE for self-paced and international courses, NPTEL for engineering, UGC for non technical post-graduation education, CEC for under-graduate education, NCERT & NIOS for school education, IGNOU for out of the school students, IIMB for management studies and NITTTR for Teacher Training programme.

Scope of SWAYAM

  • Curriculum based course contents covering diverse disciplines such as arts, science, commerce, performing arts, social sciences and humanities subjects, engineering, technology, law, medicine, agriculture etc. in higher education domain (all courses would be certification-ready in their detailed offering) .
  • School education (9 - 12 levels) modules; for teacher training as well as teaching and learning aids to children of India to help them understand the subjects better and also help them in better preparedness for competitive examinations for admissions to professional degree programs.
  • Skill based courses, which cover both post-higher secondary school skills that are presently the domain of polytechnics as well as industrial skills certified by the sector skill councils of various Ministries.
  • Advanced curriculum and professional certification under a unified scheme in higher education domain that can be tailored to meet the demands of choice based credit system (CBCS) currently being implemented in India at undergraduate level.

Guidelines

  • It is not necessary that the teacher in camera be shown thought, however, the teacher in camera may appear upto 25% of the time, rest of the time, the timeline may carry teacher՚s voice on which graphics, animation, text etc may be inserted.
  • Should record with high quality video and excellent quality noise free audio. All the Video՚s must have 16: 9 Aspect Ratio (widescreen)
