Comparison between the President and the Vice-President

President

  1. Elected by an Electoral College consisting of elected members of both the Houses of the Parliament-the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and of the Legislative Assemblies of the States.
  2. The election is held in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.
  3. No person shall be eligible for election as the President unless he is a citizen of India and has completed the age of thirty-five years.
  4. To become the President, a person should also be qualified to become a member of the House of the People.
  5. A person shall not be eligible for the election as the President if he holds any office of profit under the Government of India or the Government of any State. However, the office of the President, the Vice-President or the Governor or the Minister of the Union or of any State shall not be considered as a office of profit.
  6. The terms of the office is for five years from the date of entering upon the office.
  7. The President may resign his office by writing his resignation to the Vice-President.
  8. The President may be removed from his office by a resolution of impeachment passed by a majority of not jess than two-thirds of the total members in both the Houses of the Parliament, separately.
  9. The President exercises the executive powers of the Union on the advice of the Council of Ministers.
  10. The President is entitled to get a monthly salary of ₹ 150,000.

Vice-President

  1. Elected by an Electoral College consisting of the members of both the Houses of the Parliament i.e. … the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha (elected & nominated both) .
  2. The election is held in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.
  3. No person shall be eligible for election as the Vice-President unless he is a citizen of India and has completed the age of thirty-five years.
  4. To become the Vice-President, a person should be qualified to become a member of the Council of Stales.
  5. A person shall not be eligible for election as the Vice-President if he holds any office of profit under the Government of India or the Government of any State. However, the office of the President, the Vice-President or the Governor or the Minister of the Union or of any State shall not be considered as office of profit.
  6. The term of the office is for five years from the date of entering upon the office
  7. The Vice-President may resign his off toe by writing his resignation to the President.
  8. The Vice-President may be removed from his office by a resolution passed by the Council of States by a simple majority and agreed to by the House of the People.
  9. The Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Council of States and acts as the President in his absence.
  10. The Vice-President as the Chairman of the Council of the States gets ₹ 40,000 per month and when he acts as the President he gets a monthly salary of ₹ 50,000 per month.
