  • Accordingto Article 63, there shall be a Vice-President of India.
  • He is the ex-officio Chairman of the Council of States (the Rajya Sabha) .
  • The Vice-President is not a member of the Rajya Sabha, and hence he has no right to vote.
  • Being the Vice-President of India, he is not entitled for any salary, but he is entitled to the salary and allowances payable to the Chairman of the Council of States.

Duties of the Vice-President in Extraordinary Circumstances

  • According to Article 65, in the event of the occurrence of any vacancy in the office of the President by reason of his death, resignation or removal, or otherwise, the Vice-President shall act as the President until the date on which a new President is elected.
  • When the President is unable to discharge his functions owing to absence, illness or any other cause, the Vice-President shall discharge his functions until the date on which the President resumes his duties.
  • When the Vice-President acts as the President or discharges the functions of the President, he shall exercise all the powers of the President and shall receive the salary and emoluments of the President.
