Steps in Research Proposal: Key Characteristics and Order

Steps in Research Proposal

Identification of research topic: sources and need - theoretical and conceptual framework

Review of related Literature – studies in area of interest, local studies

Rationale and need for the study – why is this study conducted?

Definition of Terms – can be constitutive or operational. Constitutive definition elucidates a term and perhaps gives some more insight into the phenomena described by the terms & is based on theory. Operational definition provides meaning to a concept by specifying the operations that must be performed in order to measure the concept

Variables – DV, IV

Research questions, objectives and hypotheses – objectives should be clear and precise. Hypothesis has to be testable, have explanatory power, state expected relationship between variables & consistent with existing body of knowledge.

Assumptions if any - statements of what the researcher believes to be facts but cannot verify

Scope, limitations and delimitations - Limitations are those conditions beyond the control of the researcher that may play restriction on conclusions while delimitation explains boundaries of study

  • Method, sample and tools – sample explains size (randomization or stratification)

Significance of study – how findings will influence research

Technique for data analysis - how to tabulate, organize, apply statistics

Bibliography – all referenced and useful works are quoted

Time frame

Budget – remuneration and expenditure
