What is Digital Classroom, Flipped Classroom, and Blended Learning?

  • The digital classroom is “technology-enabled” classroom fully supported through information and communication technologies (ICTs).
  • In flipped classroom students receive instruction online outside classroom.
  • Blended learning is a combination of face-to-face instruction and online instruction- provided by using social media, online learning platforms, systems, and tools.

What Makes a Classroom Digital?

  • Digital archives and repositories

  • Remote access to information and communications technologies (ICTs)

  • Access to digital infrastructure with improved access to education

  • Buildings to accommodate new equipment

  • Virtualized classrooms with virtual and immersive tools as part of learning structure

Flipped Classroom, Inverted Classroom or Reverse Instruction

In flipped classroom, students are exposed to content before their classes through instructional videos. Students in class deepen their understanding of content through active learning exercises, activities, labs, and other applications.

Important Technology Tools

Besides the audiovisual tools like screen, projector, computer, videos, and presentation, following tools might be part of digital classrooms:

  • Clickers are student response systems allowing students to respond to classroom polls and quizzes, regardless of class size.
  • ePortfolios are online collections that allow students to demonstrate skills and interests to diverse audiences.
  • LMS Learning Management Systems allow presenting instructional materials (text, audio, video, etc. ), interacting with students, facilitate peer-to-peer interaction, and manage grades within a secure environment.
  • Wikis are collaborative websites edited by anyone while blogs offer a means to narrate work online.
  • Wimba classroom is a web-based meeting tool allowing teaching classes online in real-time through chat, audio, video, content display, application sharing, whiteboard and polling.
  • Podcasts are audio or video files made available for download and playback using a computer or a mobile device.
  • Simulations imitate real life phenomena, systems, or environments.
  • Smart boards are interactive whiteboards that use touch technology to detect scrolling, right mouse-clicks or keyboard detect input.
