UGC Bans Distance Learning Degree Programmes in Agriculture (Download PDF)

University Grants Commission (UGC) has prohibited imparting distance degree programmes in agriculture. Higher Education Regulator had took decision at its last meeting on ground that a degree programme in agriculture is technical in nature as it requires practical or laboratory courses.

Agriculture ministry had referred matter to commission, requesting it to consider prohibiting universities from offering Open and Distance Learning (ODL) degree programmes in agriculture.

As per UGC Open and Distance Learning Regulations, 2017, professional programmes like medicine, engineering, architecture, nursing, dental, pharmacy & physiotherapy are not permitted to be offered in distance mode.

Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) is requested for hand-holding of higher education institutions to protect interest of students enrolled in agriculture degree programme.

Nasik-based Yashwant Rao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Annamalai University, IGNOU, Kuvempu University & Nalanada Open University are among institutions offering degree & diploma programmes in agriculture science.
