Earthีšs Energy Budget: Balancing Incoming & Outgoing Radiation

Energy Budget

Dr. Manishika Jain explains energy budget: the incoming and outgoing energy balance in this lecture.

An energy budget is a balance sheet of energy income against expenditure and deals with the study of energy transfer and transformation from one form to another.

The day time and night time situations are explained in the diagram below.

Illustration: Energy Budget
  • Sun the ultimate source of heat.
  • Differential heat is the reason behind all climatic features.
  • Radiation is without actual contact or movement- from the sun to the earth through space.
  • Conduction through matter by molecular activity.
  • Convection by actual transfer of matter or substance from one place to another- convection cycles in atmosphere and oceans
  • The highest temperatures occur over tropics and sub-tropics (high insolation) .
  • Lowest temperatures occur in polar and sub polar regions.
  • Diurnal and annual range of temperatures are highest in the interiors of continents.
  • Diurnal and annual range of temperatures are least in oceans
  • Low temperature gradients are observed over tropics
  • Temperature gradients are usually low over the eastern margins of continents
  • The isotherms are irregular over the northern hemisphere- enhanced land-sea contrast
  • Mountains affect the horizontal distribution of temperature.
