Introduction

The Indian Council of Historical Research or ICHR, provides the Indian Council of Historical Research Junior Fellowship to PHD scholars and housewives who are interested in pursuing research. The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) is an independent organization, which is a society under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860. It is established in the year of 1972.

Eligibility Criteria

The Junior Research Fellowship granted by the Indian Council of Historical Research is generally provided to:

  • A student who is already pursuing a PHD or a course of equal value in an Indian university. Those enrolled in M. Phil course are however not eligible.
  • Academically outstanding housewives, for whom a professional career is out of bounds are also eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship. The allowances available to them are the same as that for the regular scholars.In some cases and depending on the performance, the scholarship may be extended with the time duration of 6 months.

Duration

The Indian Council of Historical Research Junior Fellowships are awarded for a maximum time period of 2 years for students who have not passed the NET examination. This scholarship can be extended by another 1 year in certain exceptional cases. The duration of the scholarship remains the same for students who have cleared NET. For students pursuing M. Phil and PHD at the same time the fellowship duration of 2 years may be continued for another year subject to evaluation of the research papers by the Research Projects Committee.

  • The Fellowship will come to an end within 60 days of the scholar submitting his PHD thesis or on the date of his viva-voce examination, whichever is earlier. The fellowship will, however come to an end on its own if the scholar is no longer eligible to submit either his thesis or his dissertation paper at the university where he is registered.

Application Procedure

The printed application form, published with the notification should be submitted complete in all respects to the Indian Council of Historical Research 35, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi 110001 within the decided date. Applications should be routed through the university, college or institute where the applicant is employed. The application should be accompanied by the documents stated below:

  • 5 copies of exhaustive note on the research plan.
  • Curriculum Vitae of the applicant.

Value of Scholarships

A monthly allowance of ₹ 5,000⟋-is given along with a yearly contingency allowance of ₹ 12,000⟋-to students who have not passed the NET examination conducted by UGC. For students who cleared NET, the monthly allowance is ₹ 6,000⟋-. The contingency grant will be same.
