Dual Degree, Joint Degree, Twinning Program, Double Majors: Whats the Difference? Higher Education

Dual Degree Joint Degree

Programme

  • Higher education curriculum leading to a degree.
  • Has coordinated elements (courses)
  • Completion of a programme provides the student with a higher education qualification

Dual Degree

Study two different, fields at the same time and receive two separate degrees (one per discipline)

  • If you studied psychology and business in a dual degree program, you would graduate with two degrees (that is, two diplomas) : a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) .
  • Dual degrees typically confer two different types of degrees, such as a BA/BS combo, a BS/BFA, a BS/BBA, etc.
  • Dual degrees require more credits than single degrees.
  • You will very likely need to spend more time in college, often five to six years.
  • Benefits: broaden choices, more knowledge, saving money by overlapping classes
  • This can be a combination of two bachelor՚s degrees, a bachelor՚s and a master՚s degree, or two graduate/professional degrees.
  • BITS Pilani also offers a dual degree to the students of Master of Science programs.
  • BS-MS (Dual Degree) -Integrated courses are 5-year programs with ten semesters.

2 Bachelor՚s Degree

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BS)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
  • Bachelor of Music (BM)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)

Bachelor՚s and Master՚s Degrees Combined in Dual Degree Programs

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BS)
  • Master of Arts (MA)
  • Master of Science (MS)
  • Master of Engineering (ME)
  • Master of Public Policy (MPP)
  • Master of Public Administration (MPA)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Two Professional Degrees

  • Master of Arts (MA)
  • Master of Science (MS)
  • Master of Public Policy (MPP)
  • Master of Public Health (MPH)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Master of Science in Engineering (MSE)
  • Master of Social Work (MSW)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)

Double Majors

Study two fields in one-degree program

  • A double major is when you are studying two fields in one-degree program, and a dual degree is when you are studying two fields in two separate degree programs.
  • Double major does not typically require extra coursework (or at least not as much as a dual degree program does!) and can normally be completed within four years.

Joint Degree

Core elements of two-degree programs are undertaken simultaneously.

  • This reduces study time and can enhance career prospects.
  • The elective subjects in one course may be replaced with the core subjects of the second course.
  • Good for employment as combination of skills
  • Mechanical + chemical engineering
  • Joint degree programs to students who wish to graduate with two college diplomas. Both college majors will be taken simultaneously, either at the same school or at an affiliated university. This way, you can finish both degrees in less time, compared to taking one-degree program after the other.
  • Double degrees are understood to be two degrees awarded after successful completion of a joint programme
  • The twinning program concept is yet another innovation of the University՚s Directorate of Distance Education. It envisages a tie-up between the Directorate of Distance Education, University, and another College/Institution of repute. In this mode, the University enters MOU with prestigious institutes endowed with human and physical resources and good learning ambience.
  • These partner Institutions/Colleges are referred as TWINNING CENTERS of the University, DDE. The twinning centers organize all the important tasks on behalf of the University, viz; admission, conduct of classes during weekends, semester examinations, and liasoning with the University in a more structured fashion under the strict supervision and guidance of the University.
  • The marked difference between the conventional Distance Education Programs and the Twinning Program is that classes in the former mode are conducted for Eight days in a semester (Personal Contact Program) while classes are conducted more frequently during the evening hours and weekends throughout the semester in the latter mode at the twinning centers.

Twinning Program

Shared by two universities

  • twinning programme means that the course and its full length of course time is shared by two universities and complete the curriculum according to the varied facilities available in both the universities for good results of the students for example a course of undergraduate medicine, out of ten semesters (each semester is 6 months) four semester may be in one university and the balance six semester will be in an another university for the completion of the course and the certificate is issued by the affiliated university upon completion
  • Twinning is simply a development of a relationship with people of different cultures and different geographical setting, where both parties learn and share knowledge and skills. In this partnership, the millennium development goals form the gist of the exchanges since they handle global issues and ensure environmental sustainability.
  • ‘2 + 1’ means that you will be spending two years doing your studies in Singapore or Malaysia and 1 year in the overseas university. ‘3 + 1’ means that you will be studying 3 years in Singapore or Malaysia and 1 year in the overseas university. ‘3 + 0’ means that you will be studying the entire course in Singapore or Malaysia.
  • Many institutions in countries like Malaysia offer twinning programmes in hopes of getting an excellent university certificate for a fraction of a price. Institutions such as the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College, Taylor՚s University and the Asia Pacific University College of Technology and Innovation are offering courses that they claim to produce certificates conferred by renowned institutions such as University of South Australia, University of Newcastle, Curtin University, University of Reading and many more
