  • GIAN or Global Initiative of Academic Networks was launched in the year 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.
  • This scheme aims at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs to engage with the institutes of higher education in India.
  • One of the main aims was also to augment the country՚s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reforms thereby further strengthen India՚s scientific and technological capabilities.
  • The scheme is envisaged to catalyze higher education institutions in the country. The institutions include all IITs, IIMs, Central Universities, IISc Bangalore, IISERs, NITs and IIITs subsequently cover good State Universities.

Objectives

  • To increase the involvement of reputed international faculty in the Indian academic institutes.
  • To provide ample opportunity to the faculties so as to learn and share knowledge along with teaching skills in cutting edge areas.
  • To promote documentation and development of new pedagogic methods in emerging topics of national and international interest.
  • To develop high quality course material in niche areas, both through video and print so that it can be used by a larger body of students and teachers.
  • To ensure maximum participation of students in order to seek knowledge and experience from reputed International faculty.
  • Creating avenue for possible collaborative research with the international faculty.

Eligibility & Procedure for Joining GIAN Scheme

  • All Government (State or Central) higher education Institutions/University which are in top 200 in NIRF overall rankings and having at least NAAC ‘A’ grade (3.0 and above) .
  • A local coordinator should be appointed by the competent authority of the Institute for GIAN who will manage the GIAN program of the Institute/University.
  • The documents required include Formal request letter from the highest Authority (VC/Director) of your Institute, NAAC ‘A’ grade certificate. Proof of NIRF Ranking in top 200, Formal office order for appointment of local coordinator, GIAN of the Institute/University appointment by the competent authority which should include name, email address and mobile number. These documents should be send by the respective institute to the office of the National Coordinator at IIT Kharagpur either by email/speed post.
  • The Institute name will be added in the GIAN program and a login will be created for the local coordinator to manage and view the GIAN program in the GIAN portal Global Initiative Academic Networks once the documents have been successfully verified along with the receipt.

Latest Update

  • Nearly 700 Professors from 58 countries have so far conducted about 1120 courses in specialized topics for students in Indian Higher Educational institutions. More than 40,000 students and associated Indian Faculty has benefited from this international teaching exposure.
