Four Stages of Cognitive Development

  • Sensorimotor Stage (birth-2 year)
  • Pre-operational Stage (2 - 7 year)
  • Concrete Operational Stage (7 - 11 year)
  • Formal Operational Stage (11 year-above)

Pre-Operational Stage (2 - 7 Year)

  • There are two sub stages of preoperational stage
    • Pre-conceptual stage
    • Intuitive phase

Pre-Conceptual Stage

  • Mode of thinking and reasoning is quite illogical.
  • Egocentric
  • They begin to use language, memory and imagination.
  • Animism

Intuitive Stage

  • Concept formation starts.
  • Difficulty in conservation.
  • Cannot do reversible thinking
