Location of Containers

The ease of waste collection lies in the placement of container in an appropriate location. At a distance of about 100 to 200 meters, the container should be placed.

Several factors decide the location of the container:

  • Width and length of the road.

  • Ease of collection vehicle to reach the containers

  • Volume and type of waste generation

  • Congestion of traffic

  • In narrow lanes, those collection containers can be placed at a distance of 100 meters equidistantly.

Types of Collection Vehicle Routing

Macro Routing

Total area is divided into routes which will represent single day collection of each group.

Micro Routing

It is the specific path covered by each crew and collection vehicle per day

Districting

These are done when area is large enough and single institution is unable to collect the generated waste per day.

Collection Crew

  • Persons who are involved in collecting the waste from door to door, trucks, to the transfer station or disposal site.

  • The crew consists of 8-12 persons and is headed by the supervisor.

Cost Involved in Waste Collection

  • About 60- 70% of the cost involved in total waste management is covered by waste collection.

  • The collection cost also varies for comingled and source separated waste.
