  • Fingerprint: The sets represent the fingerprints and their elements are called minutiae.

  • A suspicious document is checked for plagiarism by computing its fingerprint and querying minutiae with a precomputed index of fingerprints for all documents of a reference collection.

Monolingual Plagiarism Detection: This type of detection deals with homogeneous language settings e.g., English-English

  • Intrinsic Plagiarism Detection: This detection approach analyses the writing style or uniqueness of the author

  • Extrinsic Plagiarism Detection: Unlike the intrinsic approach, this approach compares a submitted research article against many other available relevant digital resources in repositories

Cross-Lingual Plagiarism Detection (CLPD): This detection approach is able to perform in heterogeneous language settings e.g., English-Chinese.

Turnitin Software

  • To be used for PhD thesis plagiarism detection

  • Commercial service launched in 1997

  • Turnitin's parent company, iParadigms LLC, runs the informational website Plagiarism.org and also offers a similar plagiarism-detection service for newspaper editors and book and magazine publishers called iThenticate.

  • Other tools included with the Turnitin suite are GradeMark (online grading and feedback) and Peer Mark (peer-review services).
