United state Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a 3 - step examination for medical licensure in the United States. USMLE test is the main route by which International Medical Graduates (IMGs) demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice medicine in the USA. It is sponsored by:

  • Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB)
  • National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)

Step Component

Requirement

Step 1, 2 CK and 2 CS

Officially enrolled in, or

A graduate of a US or Canadian medical school leading to the MD degree (LCME accredited), OR

A graduate of, a US medical school leading to the DO degree (AOA accredited), OR

Step 3

MD degree (or its equivalent) or

DO degree from an LCME or AOA- accredited US or Canadian medical school.

Pass Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS, and

International medical graduates obtain certification by the ECFMG.

Sequence of step:

  • For the eligibility requirements you take Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS in any sequence.
  • You may take Step 3 only after passing Step 1, Step 2CK, and Step 2 CS.

Computer based exam at Prometric Test Centers around world.

Step 2

Clinical Knowledge:

Approximately 318 MCQs.

Divided into 60- minute blocks.

Computer based exam at Prometric Test Centers around world

Clinical Skills (CS):

12 patient cases

15 minutes for each patient encounter plus 10 minutes to record each patient note.

Six test centers in US: Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles.

1 day test session-8 hours

Step 3

Day 1: FIP

Foundations of Independent Practice (FIP)

Approximately 235 MCQs.

Divided into 60- minute blocks.

Each containing 40 questions.

Computer based exam at Prometric Test centers in US.

1 day test session- 7 hours

Day 2: ACM

Advanced Clinical Medicine (ACM)

Approximately 180 MCQs.

Divided into 45-minute blocks.

Each containing 30 questions.

13 computer based case simulations (CCS)

Computer based exam at Prometric Test centers in US.

1 day test session- 9 hours
