Avinashilingam Institute for Home Sciences and Higher Education for Women, a brainchild of the eminent academician late Dr. T S Avinashilingam began in the year 1957 with mere 45 students. Today it is not only one of the largest institutions of Home Science, but also one of the pioneers in women education.

Germinating on the principles of Sri Ramkrishna Dev, Swami Vivekananda, Holy Mother Saradamani and Mahatma Gandhi; the university preaches its students a life of purity, honesty and self discipline.

Avinashilingam Institute for Home Sciences and Higher Education for Women was the first of the women colleges to bag an autonomous stature from the University of Chennai in 1978 and subsequently went onto become a deemed university in 1988, under section 3 of the UGC Act. It is rated as a B + + institute.

Under the Vice-Chancellorship of Dr. K. Kulandaivel, Avinashilingam University for Women boasts of an excellent faculty that includes some noted academicians of contemporary times. It has dedicated itself in the noble work of emancipation of women for the last 15 years.

The University has over 8 colleges under its head which illustrates of its multifaceted courses offered. The University has a wide array of programs ranging from undergraduate courses to postdoctoral programs and even vocational trainings.

Accepting courses, even general B. A, B. Sc and B. Com leads to a lengthy selection procedure for admission which includes entrance test and interview.

The University offers a wide variety of subjects from traditional languages to science and technology to modern job oriented subjects like Food Technology, Nutrition or Biomedicine only to cite a few.
