Initiated in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) , National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK) , was established as a joint venture of the Karnataka and the Central Governments with an aim to gather and distribute knowledge for the social upliftment of the society by educating its students in a professional manner. The institute had started with mere three undergraduate courses of Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering, but with time gradually passing by, other departments were incorporated, and finally as a result of this progress, KREC was renamed as National Institute of Technology in 2002. It is a Deemed University now, a status granted by UGC.

Dr. Sandeep Sancheti is the present Director of NITK. The institute comprises of 14 departments and 11 supporting centers with about 200 faculty members and 2,500 students.
