Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is a prestigious institution for inculcating the knowledge and learnings of Buddhist doctrines and Pali. Initiated in 1952 under the direction of Ven. Bhikshu Jagdish Kashyap, the institute is currently an autonomous body under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The faculty members who have the sleigh of taking forward the future of students, are themselves scholars of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Buddhist history and archeology. The institute views admissions of both in-house and foreign students.

Courses Offered at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara

For different courses offered in Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, it is affiliated to the Magadh University, Patna university and Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University for course syllabus and it has to follow these courses according to the norms of their respective Universities.

For admission to all courses, the candidate needs to pass an entrance test conducted by the institution.

The institution is affiliated to the Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University for the course of Pali Acharya. A candidate needs to possess a diploma in Pali from the same institute or from university of Calcutta, Delhi, or should have Pali as one of the subjects in graduation from any Indian or Foreign University.

  • M. A in Pali, Eligibility: A candidate should have Acharya or B. A honours degree in Pali from any recognized Indian or foreign university to get admission in M. A in Pali.

  • M. A in Philosophy, Eligibility: A candidate who has pursued B A (Hons.) in Philosophy from any recognized Indian or foreign university can opt for M. A in Philosophy.

  • M. A in Ancient Indian and Asian Studies, Eligibility: Candidates with a B A (Hons.) degree in Ancient Indian and Asian Studies or ancient Indian history, from any recognized Indian or foreign university can get admission in M. A in Ancient Indian and Asian Studies.

  • Ph. D and D. Litt in the above mentioned subjects-Candidates need to have a master's degree with at least 50% marks, from an India university or an equivalent degree from a foreign university to apply for a Ph. D or D. Litt in this institution.

  • Certificate course in Pali, duration: 1 year, Eligibility criteria: Candidates clearing 10 + 2 examination from any recognized board/university can avail this course provided they qualify the entrance examination held by the institute.

  • Diploma Course in Pali, Duration 1 year, Eligibility criteria: A candidate who has passed the certificate course in Pali from the institution, or has an equivalent degree in Pali from India or countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Bangladesh can apply for this course.

Academic Proceedings

A summer holiday of 45 days and an Autumn holiday of 15 days is given.
