Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth is a result of just a word made Mahatma Gandhi in the Nagpur session of the Indian National Congress in 1920. His word and initiative resulted in Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth in 1921, deriving its name from the name of great freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak to honour his deeds. The institute is conferred the status of a Deemed University in 1987 owing to fulfillment of provisions for the status by the University Grant Commission's (UGC) Act.

The main objective of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth is to let education creep into the minds of people through the various disciplines of Humanities, Science and Commerce to improve and upgrade their conditions of living.

Initially registered with Societies Act, it is currently a member of the Association of the Indian Universities and hence also receives financial assistance from the University Grants Commission.

The Vidyapeeth makes available to its students a huge collection of books, journals, periodicals and historical manuscripts through its own library. The institute continuously aims at modernizing the facilities in library with assistance from the UGC.

Distance Education

The Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth also has a seperate centre which offers Distance Education known as the Mukta Vidya Kendra or the Open Education Center.

Admission Process

Admission procedure at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth: Admission to foreign as well as domestic students is available to the undergraduate courses, provided that the applicants have cleared the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination and are 21 or above years of age. However if desired qualification is not possessed by the candidate, he has to appear for an entrance test conducted by the institute between the months of April and September.

The Entrance Examination tests a candidate's aptitude in English Language, Mental Awareness, Teacher Attitude, Teacher Aptitude and General Knowledge. The entrance exam is 100 marks test with time duration of 90 minutes which the student can avail by paying fees of Rs. 500/-.
