Dr. B R Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad

Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) was the first Open University to be established in the country in August 1982, due to a bill passed by the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature.

Previously known as the Andhra Pradesh Open University, it is located in the city of Hyderabad.

Proving its motto of “education at your doorstep” it has a large network of about 150 study centers all over Andhra Pradesh.

BRAOU provides its students with printed material accompanied by audio/video lessons. It also broadcasts its lessons through AIR and Doordarshan's local channel. The facility of interactive telecommunication is provided by BRAOU, even on Sundays.

The Study Centers of BRAOU are categorized into PG study centers, regional study centers, Twin Cities Centers and District Centers. There are about 13 PG study centers. 7 study centers are meant exclusively for women, while 2 study centers are located in the central prison to cater to the educational needs of the prisoners.
