  • This is a reflection of changing demand for goods and services and changing demand for labour by production technology in the different sectors.
  • Economic development deals with problems of underdeveloped countries and economic growth deals with the problems of developed countries.
  • The term economic growth refers to an increase over time in a country՚s real output of goods and services or more appropriately product per capita.
  • The term economic development involves a steady decline in agriculture՚s share in GNP and a corresponding increase in the share of industries, trade, banking, construction and services.
  • Such a transformation in economic structure is invariably accompanied by a shift in the occupational structure of the labour force and an improvement in its skill and productivity.

  • The economic growth is quantitative sustained increase in the country՚s per capita output or income accompanied by expansion in its labour force, consumption, capital and volume of trade.
  • Economic development is related wit the qualitative change in economic wants, goods incentives and institutions.

  • Friedman defines growth as an expansion of the system in one or more dimensions without a change in its structure and development as an innovative process leading to the structural transformation of social system.

Charecterstics of Economic Development (3)

  • Economic growth means transformation of an economy from a state of under-development to a state of development, from an agrarian to highly industrialized society, from a low saver to a high saver and from rural to urban one. This kind of transformation is reflected more in sustained and steady rise in national and per capita income.
  • Economic development is the economic growth accompanied by the rise in productivity.
  • Economic development is a process whereby per capita income of a country grows over a long period of time subject to the conditions that absolute poverty does not increase and income distribution does not become more unequal.
  • Development in all societies must have three objectives:
  • To increase availability and widen the distribution of life sustaining goods.
